Macy’s sale tags, decoded

Published September 7, 2026

Macy’s runs so many overlapping promotions that the price tags can be confusing. Knowing what each label means — and which ones are final sale — helps you judge whether a markdown is genuinely deep and whether you can return it. Here’s the quick decoder.

Limited-Time Special

This is a temporary sale price, usually tied to a specific promotional event and lasting a set number of days. It’s a real discount off Macy’s regular price, but it isn’t a clearance — the item isn’t going away, and a similar “special” often comes back later. Returns follow Macy’s normal policy.

What it means for you: a good but not urgent deal. If the percentage off is strong (40%+ on a brand you want), it’s worth it; if it’s a small cut, you can usually wait for a bigger event.

Clearance

Clearance means the item is being discontinued or cleared out. Prices are marked down harder and can keep dropping, but stock is limited to what’s left — sizes and colors thin out fast. This is where the deepest legitimate discounts live.

What it means for you: if your size is in stock at a clearance price you like, that’s usually the moment to buy. It may not be restocked.

Last Act

“Last Act” is Macy’s final-clearance tier — the last markdowns before an item leaves the store for good. The catch: Last Act items are typically final sale and cannot be returned. Prices are often excellent, but you’re accepting the no-return trade-off.

Before buying Last Act: be sure of your size and that you actually want it. Final sale means no returns — great for a sure thing, risky for a “maybe.”

Everyday Values / Special Everyday

These are ongoing low prices rather than temporary sales, so a coupon or extra discount often won’t stack on them. If a code says “excludes Everyday Values,” this is why.

The coupon fine print

Macy’s promo codes (like an extra 20% off) usually exclude a long list of brands — many designer names, some beauty, and often Last Act. If a code won’t apply, the brand is probably on the exclusion list. It’s not a glitch; it’s by design.

Returns at a glance

Most Macy’s items have a return window of around 30 days (confirm current terms on the site), but Last Act and some designer/final-sale items are excluded. Keep tags attached and packaging intact until you’re sure. For a broader comparison across stores, see our return policy cheat-sheet.
