The U.S. sale calendar, month by month

Published September 7, 2026

Most things in the U.S. go on sale on a predictable schedule. If you can wait a few weeks, you can often buy the exact same item for much less by timing it to the right holiday or clearance cycle. Here’s a month-by-month map of when to buy what — and when to just wait.

January

Best for: bed linens and towels (traditional “white sales”), fitness gear and activewear (New-Year resolutions), and winter-clothing clearance as stores clear the season. TVs also dip ahead of the Super Bowl.

February

Best for: Presidents’ Day sales on mattresses, furniture and large appliances. Winter coats and boots hit deep clearance. Valentine’s means chocolate and flowers spike — buy those after the 14th if you can.

March

Best for: spring apparel arrivals with early promos, and tech deals as tax refunds land. Frozen foods (National Frozen Food Month) and luggage before spring travel.

April

Best for: spring-cleaning and home-organization, vacuums, and Earth-Day promos on eco products. Old winter stock is at its final markdowns.

May

Best for: Memorial Day — one of the year’s best weekends for mattresses, appliances, patio furniture and grills. Mother’s Day drives beauty and jewelry promos.

June

Best for: Father’s Day tools and electronics, summer apparel, and mid-year clearance. A good month for gym equipment and outdoor gear.

July

Best for: Amazon Prime Day and the many competing sales that copy it — strong for electronics, home and everyday essentials. Fourth-of-July weekend brings appliance and furniture deals; summer apparel starts clearing.

August

Best for: back-to-school — laptops, tablets, dorm and storage, backpacks and basics. Many states run tax-free weekends. Patio and summer items go to clearance.

September

Best for: Labor Day sales on mattresses, appliances and the last patio clearance. Fall fashion arrives, and beauty shoppers get Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty at around 50% off rotating brands.

October

Best for: Amazon’s fall sale event and early holiday deals — many Black-Friday-level prices appear now. Halloween costumes and candy; jeans and denim traditionally dip.

November

Best for: Black Friday and Cyber Monday — the biggest week of the year for electronics, TVs, laptops, toys and more. Deals now stretch across the whole month, so you don’t have to wait for the exact Friday.

December

Best for: holiday promos early in the month, then post-Christmas clearance (Dec 26 onward) on wrapping, décor, winter clothing and leftover gifts. Gift cards and toys see strong late-month deals.

Rule of thumb: seasonal items are cheapest at the end of their season (patio in late summer, coats in late winter), and big-ticket categories (mattresses, appliances, furniture) cluster around three-day holiday weekends.

When not to wait

Timing helps most on planned, big-ticket buys. For fast-moving deals — a cult beauty product at 50% off, a designer bag on clearance in your exact style — stock is the constraint, not the calendar. Those can sell out before the “ideal” month arrives. That’s the gap we watch: the deal board flags noteworthy drops when they actually happen, with the price checked and dated.
